India's largest-ever initial public offering took less than an hour to sell out. Jio Platforms, the telecom and digital arm of Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries, opened its ₹30,213 crore IPO on Wednesday, and by 7 pm the issue had been subscribed 3.04 times. The headline number, however, hides a split: institutions bid aggressively while ordinary retail investors held back on the first day.

For the millions of Indians who use a Jio SIM, this is the first chance to own a piece of the network itself. Here is everything that happened on Day 1, what the grey market is signalling, and the key dates every applicant needs to know.

Jio IPO Subscription Status Day 1: Institutions Lead, Retail Lags

Bidding opened at 10 am, and the issue crossed full subscription within roughly an hour — the fastest among India's ten biggest IPOs, according to market trackers. By 10:45 am, bids had come in for 22.71 crore shares against 19.75 crore on offer.

By the end of the day, the picture looked like this:

Investor categoryDay 1 subscription (as of 7 pm)
Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIB)9.04 times
Non-Institutional Investors (NII)1.61 times
Retail Individual Investors0.73 times
Overall3.04 times

Retail investors often wait until the final day to bid, so the 0.73x figure is not unusual for a mega issue. But it shows that, for now, the excitement is coming from mutual funds, insurers and foreign institutions rather than small investors.

Institutional confidence had already been signalled before the issue opened. On October 19, Jio Platforms raised about ₹8,110 crore from 212 anchor investors, all at the top of the price band, ₹1,119 per share.

Jio IPO GMP Today: What the Grey Market Is Saying

The grey market premium (GMP) — the unofficial price at which IPO shares trade before listing — stayed firm but slipped slightly through the day. One tracker recorded the GMP at ₹251 at 3:30 pm, down from ₹272 in the morning, pointing to an indicative listing price of about ₹1,370, roughly 22% above the upper band. Other trackers placed it as high as ₹276 earlier in the session.

Important: GMP is unregulated and can change sharply before listing. It is a sentiment indicator, not a guarantee of listing gains.

Jio IPO Price Band, Lot Size and Investment Limits

The issue is priced at ₹1,065 to ₹1,119 per share, with a minimum bid of one lot of 12 shares.

Why the Jio IPO Is a Record

At ₹30,213 crore, the issue is about 8% larger than Hyundai Motor India's ₹27,858.75 crore IPO of 2024, which held the record until now. At the upper end of the band, Jio Platforms is valued at roughly ₹10.3 lakh crore, or about $108 billion — enough to place it among India's most valuable listed companies on day one.

The structure is also unusual for a mega IPO. Hyundai and LIC were offers for sale, where existing owners cashed out. Jio's issue is a 100% fresh issue of 27 crore new shares, so all the money goes to the company. Global investors such as Google, Meta and KKR, which together with others own about a third of Jio Platforms, are not selling any shares.

Where the Money Will Go

The bulk of the proceeds will not fund new towers or 5G expansion. Jio plans to use ₹27,500 crore to prepay borrowings of its main operating subsidiary, Reliance Jio Infocomm (RJIL). The rest is earmarked for general corporate purposes.

Managing director Akash Ambani has said the proceeds would make the company "net-debt-free", with future growth funded from its own revenue. As of June 30, 2026, Jio's net debt stood at ₹9,539 crore, sharply down from ₹48,440 crore in March 2024.

Jio Platforms Financials: Steady Growth, Big Profits

Particulars (₹ crore)FY24FY25FY26
Revenue from operations1,09,5581,28,2181,46,885
Profit after tax21,42326,10930,049

Revenue grew 14.6% in FY26, EBITDA reached ₹76,255 crore and net profit rose about 15%. In the April–June 2026 quarter, the company reported revenue of ₹39,173 crore, EBITDA of ₹20,865 crore and net profit of ₹7,764 crore.

Jio's telecom arm served 524.4 million customers as of March 31, 2026, and carries around 60% of India's wireless data traffic. At the upper band, the IPO values Jio at about 34 times FY26 earnings, below the roughly 39 times at which rival Bharti Airtel trades.

Risks Investors Should Weigh

  • Spectrum dues: The company owes around ₹1.05 lakh crore to the Department of Telecommunications in deferred spectrum payments, a liability separate from its net debt.
  • Dependence on prepaid mobile: Prepaid connectivity made up about 77% of revenue in FY26, leaving the business sensitive to tariff decisions and competition.
  • Competition: Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea continue to compete hard on price and network quality.
  • Slow broadband growth: Fixed broadband penetration in India is still only about 20%, which could limit near-term growth in that segment.

What It Means for Reliance Shareholders

Reliance Industries shares rose nearly 3% to about ₹1,209 on October 15, the day the price band was announced. The listing will, for the first time, put a separate market price on Reliance's digital business. Investors will watch subscription data on Thursday and Friday, particularly whether retail demand picks up before the issue closes.
